Bad breath, scientifically called halitosis, is a condition that affects many people who often don't even know it very well. However, experts are categorical: it is necessary to investigate the origin of the problem in order to know how to avoid or treat it.

“Bad breath is caused by the presence of bacteria that feed on protein molecules, which releases sulfur,” says Marcos Moura, president of the Brazilian Halitosis Association. Sulfur is a volatile element responsible for bad breath.

Among the parts of the mouth, dentist Willian Frossard states that the tongue is almost always the most responsible for bad breath: “it has many villi, where food remains and cells that come loose from the mucosa are deposited and deteriorate”, he says. Therefore, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the mouth daily.

“It is recommended that you brush your teeth, floss and scrape your tongue,” emphasizes Marcos.

Cavities and inflammation

In addition to food particles, Willian reports that periodontal problems, such as cavities and gum inflammation, also favor the action of bacteria and consequent bad breath.

Following a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water, in addition to regular visits to the dentist, are Marcos' main recommendations for avoiding bad breath. He also reveals that there are some tricks to combat halitosis, such as eating citrus fruits. They promote greater salivation, which helps to clean the mouth.

Regarding chewing gum, which is almost always used to combat bad breath, Willian explains: “Chewing gum also stimulates salivation and the aroma masks the bad smell, but the product should not contain sugar, because it is food for bacteria.” The professional also adds: “Chewing gum masks the smell, but it does not solve the problem.”
